Veiligheid van CNG voertuigen (duurzame mobiliteit)
Wereldwijd rijden er al meer dan twintig miljoen voertuigen rond op CNG. België telt zo'n 16.000 auto's op CNG. CNG of Compressed Natural Gas is hetzelfde aardgas als waarmee we ook onze huizen verwarmen. Aardgas is vrijwel overal ter wereld voorradig en is minder vervuilend dan benzine of diesel. Verschillende constructeurs zien meer toekomst in deze technologie dan in de elektrische auto. Voor vrachtwagens wint LNG als brandstof sterk aan belang.
CNG is aardgas dat onder druk wordt gebracht (tussen 200 en 300 bar) en bestaat voornamelijk uit methaan. LPG daarentegen (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is een mengsel van propaan en butaan dat wordt gecomprimeerd onder een druk van 5 tot 7 bar. CNG kan bij omgevingstemperatuur in gasvorm worden opgeslagen. In tegenstelling tot LPG is CNG bovendien lichter dan lucht, en bijgevolg mogen aardgasvoertuigen ook in ondergrondse garages worden geparkeerd.
