A sprinkler system is one of the most effective forms of automatic firefighting. The system is designed to immediately detect, signal and control or even extinguish a fire in its early stages. But how exactly does it work and what is involved in the inspection?
What is a sprinkler system? #
What exactly is a sprinkler system? Basically, it is a network of pressurised water pipes mounted on the ceiling or in the roof structure of a building. The network is equipped with sprinkler heads at strategic locations. These heads activate individually as soon as a specific temperature is reached due to the heat of a fire. This limits the water damage to the location of the fire.
Legislation and Obligations #
Many entrepreneurs wonder: what legislation applies to sprinklers in businesses? In Belgium, legislation on fire prevention in the workplace is laid down in the Codex on Well-being at Work. In addition, there are specific standards such as the European standard NBN EN 12845 or the American standard NFPA 13 that companies must comply with. Fire insurers often impose specific requirements to ensure business continuity and limit risks.
How to inspect a sprinkler system? #
Regular checks are essential to guarantee the reliability of the system. But how do we actually test a sprinkler system? An accredited testing body such as Vinçotte carries out periodic inspections to check the condition of the pipes, the water supply and the proper functioning of the alarm valves.This inspection often includes a thorough test of the critical components.
