A 650-tonne crane. An 84-metre boom. And 160 tonnes of history being temporarily relocated.
As part of the City of Antwerp's Scheldt Quays Master Plan, stabilisation work on the historic quay wall in the Rijnkaai zone began this week. The Rijnkaai is a place steeped in heritage, from the Waagnatie to the mooring place of the Red Star Line. But before all that work can begin, a harbour crane dating from 1954 must first be temporarily relocated.
No lift without inspection
Although the 650-tonne crane with its 84-metre boom steals the show, the real work began before the first metre of steel was lifted into the air. Without our thorough safety inspection, this giant would not have been allowed to be used for this complex task.
With projects of this magnitude, there is no room for error. Our experts subjected the crane to a rigorous inspection to ensure that every cable, connection and hydraulic system met the highest safety requirements. Only after we gave the green light could this feat be safely commenced.
